Labrador Retriever Vs Golden Retriever

They are often confused with their distant cousins the Labrador Retriever, although there are a few key differences.

  • Coat differences

A Labrador will have short and wiry coats. Compared to the Golden Retriever breed that is described as having medium- long coats.

  • Breed standard colours

A Lab’s breed standard colours are described as Black, Chocolate, Liver and Yellow. Whereas the BKC records the Golden Retriever as having just 3 breed standard colours: Cream, Gold and Golden.

Most people believe they were originally bred in 1864 by Lord Tweedmouth of Scotland. His records show that he crossed a ‘yellow Retriever with a ‘Tweed Water Spaniel’.
